june cards, part 2

back today with more cards!  i have several that i made between May and June so i thought i would show you a few more.
i made this first one weeks ago for a sketch challenge on the Two Peas website.  except for the washi tape, white twine, and buttons, it is all Crate Paper product.  (have you noticed i love CP???)  oh, wait, the stamps {"happy birthday" and "make a wish"} are Papertrey Ink.  for what it's worth...i love PTI stamps.  they are high quality and give you a "firm", crisp image.  i've bought a lot of other clear stamps and have had blurry results so i pretty much vowed not to use any other brand--unless i know they are quality products.
back to the card...the patterned paper is from the Story Teller line.  i became smitten with this collection back when they gave a sneak peak of it on the Crate Paper blog.  this was months before it was actually released and i couldn't wait to get my hands on it.  mainly, it was all because of the chipboard vintage typewriter.  so silly but my eye can't help what it's attracted to, i suppose, and i'm in love vintage typewriters.
the little scalloped edge here at the top is from an older CP set, Neighborhood.
crate paper AGAIN!  only this time, it's mostly papers from the Random collection.  i was inspired to make this card by some Simple Stories paper, out of the Summer Fresh series.  i think this card works for either a male or female and it really makes me think of summer.
you can see my inspiration in the photo below from Two Peas, the first "card" in the second row.  it's funny, because i am not much of a primary color kind of person.  i prefer more complex colors but there's something about this summer that is drawing me to the red, yellow, and blue palette.  i know it's trending and i love a good trend so that's probably what it is!
{summer fresh flashcards}
i used Summer Fresh paper for the following card, made for the Saturday Sketch Challenge with Kimber on the Two Peas website.  I actually submitted the project ahead of schedule, too, so that was pretty surprising!
i used paper from the 6x6 paper pad and hand stitched above and below the chevrons.  i cut out the little brown and floral flag tag from a different paper and stamped "Celebrate Today" on it.  the stamp is PTI, from the Friendship Jar set.  i have definitely not used that stamp set enough!  lastly, some blue twine from my Etsy shop, a white tag from Staples, and a small piece of burlap to finish it up.
that's all for today, folks!  are you all getting ready for July 4th?  i'm not sure yet what we're doing but in the past we have driven to Anaheim and parked in the street to catch the Disneyland fireworks in the evening.  we are literally parked IN the street with dozens of other cars.  people get out of their cars to stand and watch the amazing display.  not sure we'll be able to do that this year since Mr. Bagubian will need to be in bed long before they start, but a good barbecue is always fun, too.

june cards

hello, friends! i thought i would share some cards with you today since it has been awhile since i posted any.
this first one features Pretty Party papers and accents from Crate Paper.  the colors and patterns in this collection are so, so sweet and make me wish i had a little girl so i could plan a party just for her!  luckily i have friends with little girls and 3 wonderful nieces who can benefit from this set.
in particular, a friend's daughter recently turned 2 and it gave me the perfect opportunity to use some goodies from the collection. i am so drawn to the color combination of pink and yellow and i also love the addition of the blue polka dot journaling card from Cosmo Cricket's Odds 'N Ends line.  the lace bits are also a new favorite accent of mine and i find myself adding them to nearly EVERYTHING i make these days!  the sentiment stamps are from Papertrey Ink and you can find the red twine and doily in my Etsy shop.
speaking of 3 nieces, the third was just born on June 3rd so she's brand new!  i made this card with the intention of giving it to her parents but because new baby cards are so fun to make, i ended up creating a whole different card for them instead.  this one will be for sale in my Etsy shop.
i used products from My Mind's Eye, Crate Paper, and Hambly for this, and made the little "sweet baby" tag using Papertrey Ink stamps.  half of a doily, scrunched seam binding, and washi tape finish this off.
i love the soft colors, and the Follow Your Heart papers from My Mind's Eye are just dreamy.
this is the card i will be sending to Miss Iris to welcome her into our world.  the collage paper on the bottom of the card is K & Company and is a couple of years old.  i fell in love with this little chick back then and bought tons of the paper, then hoarded it and never used it until now!  ridiculous, but it is still so precious for the new baby of the family.
the journaling label is another Cosmo Cricket goodie (and again it's a couple of years old).  the sentiment stamp is My Mind's Eye, from the Miss Caroline collection, and the backing paper on the top half of the card, as well as the teensy "this day" label, are from Prima's Songbird line.  my requisite doilies, buttons, and lace bits are here, as well.
it's difficult to make out, but i used a piece of cream washi tape with tiny bows on it as an accent and hand stitched over it.  i used my vintage typewriter to type "too sweet" onto a thin strip of vellum which i then stitched to the paper.
i was planning to send this card to Miss Iris but in 2 weeks, Mr. Bagubian and I will be flying to NY to see my family so i will get to meet her (yippy!) and deliver her card in person.

that's all from me today.  if you have any questions about products or techniques on any of these cards, feel free to ask!  i hope you're having a terrific Monday!

my apologies

hello everyone!  it's been awhile, i know.  i will admit that i had a little case of the blogger blues.  i will talk more about that in a minute, but i have a better attitude now--and i'm on summer vacation!  the last week of school was HECTIC and i got pretty burned out which was part of the reason for the blogging break.  then i enrolled in an online blogging class that has been incredibly informative and it's helping me get back into the swing of the things.

one of the "lessons" discussed blog authenticity and staying true to yourself and to your readers.  the instructor talked about following through with your promises.  i have been terrible about this--not because i am fake but because of time constraints.  she said that if you say you are going to write a weekly column, then do it.  i started running two weekly columns (foto finish and thrifty thursday) and those fell to the wayside. i may revamp this blog and do away with them being weekly articles since i cannot follow through with them.

my focus for my blog is not to air dirty laundry or complain about things.  however, i have been feeling discouraged about blogging for a solid month--so much so that i wanted to stop blogging because i felt that no one cared.  yes, this is a relatively new blog, and i must realize that building a following takes time.  i have to post interesting content and post it regularly.  i started out slowly on purpose, not wanting to get overwhelmed by posting every single day because i wanted to enjoy it.  i definitely didn't expect to become an overnight success, especially since this little corner of the internet is still finding it's voice and direction.

i'm very scared of failing at this and if i can admit this to all of you...i am sooo insecure!  i am an artist and i think that artists are some of the most insecure people.  i won't speak for everyone but i think it's true.  BUT...i have to put myself out there to be heard and overcome my fear of failing.  if i don't, it will be that insecurity that causes my failure.

so, in trying to overcome these destructive feelings, i have a confession to make.  i ran a contest back in May in the hopes of building my blog viewership.  i promised a gift certificate to my Etsy shop to a random winner.  there were several ways to enter.  this is extremely painful for me to admit, but NO ONE participated.  that sent my confidence level to the floor and i nearly quit the whole thing because i really didn't think anyone cared.  i honestly still don't know if anyone cares but the important thing is that I DO!  i want to share my creative aspirations with you.  i want to write about my life even if it's interesting to no one but myself.  i am doing this for ME above anyone else.  (i think my mom reads all my posts, though, so i guess that's 2 people who really care!)

i started blogging for a few reasons.  i like to write and i like to be creative.  a blog lets me do both at the same time.  thurston post is somewhat of an online diary that i can go back to and read in the future to see what i was doing in June 2012.  i can see the projects i worked on and the photos i took.  my family lives on the east coast while i live on the west coast and this is also a good way for them to keep up with what's going on with me.  i'm hoping to connect with other like-minded people, as well.  hopefully, (someday) there will be people out there who come across this blog and find something here that speaks to them.  lastly, i sell my handmade greeting cards on Etsy and this blog helps promote them.  i can also offer more photos of the cards and details of the design process.  so even though i am doing this for ME above anyone else, i'd still like to grow my readership.  i just need more time...it will happen.

well, i've blathered on long enough.  if you stayed for this entire post, my sincerest thanks.  you will notice the self portraits.  i took them for my last project of my photography class.  our assignment was to do a photo essay and the instructor asked us to challenge ourselves.  i decided to go the extremely personal route and photograph my insecurity.  because this post is largely about that very same thing, i'm showing you some of the photos from the essay.

NOTE: i did not post a winner for the contest like i said i would, simply because there wasn't one.  [if you feel that you did participate and were overlooked, please send me an email and tell me.  it was not my intention to advertise a contest with a prize and not deliver a winner if there indeed was one.]

thank you for reading...i truly appreciate each person who reads this blog.
